I’ve challenged you to the daily adventure before, and want to tell you about a recent one I had as a means of provoking more.
I’ve lived in a number of places where several inches of new snow is not an unusual weather event. But here in sunny South Carolina, four or five inches of fluffy powder like we had last weekend is cause for celebration.
My friends Seth, Carroll, Jenny and I met up on Saturday morning for a tour around town. We looped together each of our houses to pass through the Converse Heights and Fernwood, Cottonwood Trail, Pill Hill, Duncan Park, South Converse, Hampton Heights and downtown. We started early enough that we ran plenty of untracked trails and streets, and commanded even the downtown thoroughfares as we ran four across through ankle deep snow along Spring Street and Main Street.
Our route took us through a century or so of Spartanburg residential development, from the early 20th century in Hampton Heights and Converse Heights to the early 90s and 2000s in Andrews Farm. There were other adventurers out sledding on usually busy streets and side streets alike, chosen not because of low traffic but based solely on slope.
With everything looking so different in the snow, we felt a special freedom in a carless community. Stress-free foot travel changed our perspective as much as the fluffy stuff, and our adventure and the fellowship included added another reason to love where we live.
