Growing in Service

February 3, 2016

On Monday January 16, three Wofford students donated their time to getting a new PAL project launched. The day was cold and windy, but that did little to deter the enthusiasm of Emily Alford, Erica Fulton and Aleah Qureshi. Our volunteers put their interest in sustainable food systems and healthy communities into action through their participation in the MLK Day of Service, sponsored by the United Way of the Piedmont.

PAL is building a demonstration wicking garden bed to encourage neighbors to grow some of their own food. Gardening provides healthy outdoor activity as well as wholesome produce. Wicking beds make it easier to care for gardens through hot summers since they have built in watering systems. The garden bed at PAL is being made from both recycled and purchased materials and will grow herbs and strawberries.

Front yard urban gardening can contribute to community building and personal wellness. Research by several universities shows that gardening leads to measurable improvements in blood pressure, brain activity and feelings of well being. Similar benefits are noted in those who volunteer in their communities. We hope that the project sparks interest in the Hampton Heights neighborhood and beyond. Thanks again to Emily, Erica, and Aleah for their willingness to grow in service.
